De Formule 1-wereld heeft uitgebreid stilgestaan bij het overlijden van de legendarische commentator Murray Walker. De Brit overleed zaterdagavond op 97-jarige leeftijd.
Walker deed als sinds de jaren 40 verslag van de Grands Prix en werd als vaste Formule 1 commentator aangesteld in 1976. Hij werkte tot en met 1996 voor de BBC en ging daarna vijf jaar voor ITV aan de slag. Daarmee was hij voor vele Britten en internationale autosportliefhebbers de stem van de Formule 1. In 2001 gaf hij voor de laatste keer live commentaar bij een Grand Prix.
Legendarisch uitspraken
De Brit stond bekend om zijn hoge stem, enthousiaste, geanimeerde commentaar én ‘Murrayaanse’ uitspraken, zoals “Unless I’m very much mistaken – which I am!” en “With half of the race gone, there is half the race still to go”.
In de Formule 1-wereld werd er door mede-commentatoren, coureurs en teams met veel verdriet gereageerd op het overlijden van Murray.
